FAQ for Therapy

Is Therapy Right for me?

Great question! We believe therapy can benefit everyone; but, the truth is seeking out therapy is an individual choice. The reasons people seek therapy is infinite and if you are considering it as an option, it’s probably worth exploring. Working with a therapist can help provide a fresh perspective, new strategies for coping with pain and uncertainty, and opportunities for growth and self reflection.

What is Therapy like?

Therapy is work. Most often, hard work. Much like life, sometimes you feel like you’re on a roll, and other times it may feel like you’re not moving at all. The good news is that therapy is a journey of personal self-discovery and skill-building that empowers us to move toward what meets our needs. You can expect to build a supportive alliance with your therapist. Sometimes you’ll laugh or cry, you might practice life skills together, and most assuredly, you will sit in moments of silence together.

You must take an active role in your care for therapy to be most effective. This means being honest, taking responsibility for your actions, and nurturing a willingness to change. There may be times when we ask you to take certain actions in between sessions, such as breathwork, trying out a new daily ritual or keeping a journal. These assignments will help you integrate what we uncover in sessions into your life outside of therapy.

How will Therapy Help me?

Therapy will provide lifelong tools that can help deepen your relationship with yourself, your perspectives about people, and situations you encounter in the world. Human thoughts and behaviors take a long time to develop and we can confidently say lasting change does not occur overnight. Thankfully therapy (and other therapeutic modalities) is intended to support change at a pace that is manageable and sustainable for you.

Credible sources such as the APA, American Psychiatric Association, American Counseling Association, Psychology Today, Harvard Medical School, and more highlight the usefulness of therapy and its ability to:

  • Improve mood and regulate emotions

  • Deal with overthinking

  • Discover and adjust unhelpful patterns in thoughts, feelings, relationships, etc.

  • Process and deal with loss or trauma

  • Deal positively with change and adjust to new situations (both wanted and unwanted)

  • Live a happier, more fulfilling life

How Long will I be in Therapy?

Individual sessions are 45 minutes. Together, we will determine how frequently we meet (weekly, biweekly, monthly), the best type of therapy to use, and how long we should continue. When our time comes to an end, the door remains open for what we call “maintenance” sessions which support continued integration of therapy skills in life. We know that your world is always evolving, and we are here to support you!

What happens during my first appointment?

You may be feeling a little apprehensive about your first appointment. Or a little excited. Either (or both) are completely normal! During this first session, your therapist will ask questions pertaining to your intake, provide reflections, and help you begin establishing personal therapy goals.

Is Therapy ConfidentIAl?

Client and therapist confidentiality is one of the cornerstones of therapy. It is one of the reasons therapy feels like a safe space to share and release. What you share is protected information and only with your written consent can anything be shared.

There are some exceptions to this, including suspicion of, or confirmed, incidents of abuse, maltreatment, self-harm, and harm to others. As therapists, we are mandated reporters to appropriate entities or agencies when necessary.
